Halloween Costume Options: The Good Witch
I get a kick out of dressing up as a witch. I don’t like being an evil witch or a sexy witch–I like being a good witch. A goody-two-shoes witch who probably befriends unicorns and fairies and loves the color purple. I’m not so girly during the rest of the year, but my ‘I wanna be cute’ side tends to come out around Halloween. It’s likely because everyone else is trying to dress for slut-o-ween and I just want to be the rebel.
Last year, I won an award as the “best nurturing witch” at the melting pot. Everyone else showed up in black, but I decided to go nature-tastic. It’s definitely fun standing out in a crowd and it’s a certain way to get your costuming skills noticed.
If you want to be a good witch for Halloween, it’s best to go nontraditional. You can wear any medieval or fantasy outfit that appeals to you–just make sure to include the necessary accessories, like a wand. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter is a great example of a good witch who isn’t always friendly or seen in puffy dresses–even if she is a perfectionist and likes to be very feminine at times.
A costumer who goes by ZipZip made a phenomenal and historical 1980s good witch costume. ZipZip modeled her costume on several purchasable patterns, but used historical samples and her own talent to alter them into what she wanted. This is a technique employed by many successful costumers, and it can help you save time.
The good witch alternative is to go with the classic: Glinda the Good Witch of the North from The Wizard of Oz. Softspoken and friendly, Glinda is kind and uses her powers to help others. She also has a very interesting and not-so-perfect backstory, should you choose to read Wicked.
WizardofOzfan39 makes extraodinary original Wizard of Oz costumes. Check out this award-winning Glinda the Good Witch costume to see how it’s done.
Yep, I think this is The Costumer’s Halloween costume right here.
