Happy Earth Day! Environmentally Friendly Costumes for Earth Lovers

Happy Earth Day!

Earth

In respect of our planet, here are some tips to help you consider our environment (and your own health) when you are looking at purchasing or making costumes. Some of these tips will also help you save money–in this economy, why say no to that?

Reuse! There are many materials which can be reused. The staff over at Seventh Kingdom IGE (a game kind of like a LARP) has been known to utilize all sorts of foam, padding, and various ’scrap’ materials to make their costumes and atmosphere. You can reuse the following types of materials:

  • Old costumes
  • Scrap fabric
  • Sofas
  • Old wigs
  • Thrift store specials

Mix and Match. This is particularly useful for anyone that has their color preferences. For example, in my medieval/renaissance/fantasy wardrobe, I have tons of green and brown costumes, but I can make several different looks witih different pieces and by combining items. There’s no need to buy a new item when you can simply match what you already own.

Buy Earth-Friendly Materials. Looking for a bargain, it might be tempting to snatch up an item at the lowest price. However, think about the environment–are you buying something that you will reuse and re-wear, or something that you feel is disposable? Make sure that no lead paints have been used, especially on children’s clothing. If it works with your costume, try using natural-colored cotton and other earth-friendly materials.

Save the Planet. Literally. You can dress as a superhero. They’re pretty good at saving the planet. Here’s a Superman outfit to get you started.
