Academy Award Profile of Michael O’Connor: Costume Designer for ‘The Duchess’

Published by madrigalblue at 8:49 pm under TV and Film Costumes Edit This

Knightley as The DuchessIn the United Kingdom, costume designer Michael O’Connor is considered a master of detail. It’s no surprise to many that he’s been nominated for the Achievement in Costume Design Oscar. Working originally in theatre, O’Connor is noted for dressing shows and films of a particularly British nature, such as the Harry Potter films.

In an interview with the New Zealand Listener, O’Connor describes the extravagance of the era in which the film takes place. Historically, he notes, women of a more voluptuous nature (compared to Keira Knightly, anyway) would fit into these very form-enhancing dresses. O’Connor also notes how the era’s women had a penchant for placing animals in their hair (not always alive–in one scene, Knightley wears fox tails in her hair).*

Keira Knightley gave an interview to UK’s PopSugar, in which she answered questions regarding her costumes in The Duchess. Knightley noted that she was honored to work with O’Connor, and even mentioned that the corset helped her physically hold certain emotions which enabled her to stay easily in character. Knightley especially notes the cumbersome nature of the costumes, informing the public that it was rather difficult to use the toilet while wearing them.

*While historically accurate, The Costumer thinks this practice is altogether nasty, and has opted not to use that photo

If anyone out there has pattern sources for say, the blue hunting jacket and the blue/burnt orange day jacket with fringe, I’d be most interested. I am on “the other side of the pond”, here in the U.S. - Seattle actually.

Looking for advice from anyone who might be a fellow historical costumer and lead me toward drafts or actual patterns I might be able to modify to my shape which has more bustline than Miss Keira!

    Happy 2010!
