Kilt Week: Kilts and Formality
Once upon a time, I went to a wedding with my now-fiance, who was wearing his kilt. It was a formal occasion and he was dressed most appropriately, though one of the other guests there certainly took notice of him, practically stalking him. I noticed the telltale pink streak in her hair, and the black lace on her heels. Really, honey…he’s not punk, he’s Scottish. That’s all I wanted to say to her. But, being that it was a formal event, I just pretended she wasn’t staring at my date, even though people kept coming up to me to ask why. Therefore, if kilts are for formal occasions, what’s the confusion?
Kilts weren’t always for formal occasions, and this still holds true. Remember Braveheart? The Highland kilt was his every day wear, the tartan being the mark of his clan–a favor of which he even bestowed upon his bride to be in the beginning of the movie. (Now that I’m engaged, does this mean I’m supposed to get one of those?) Kilts can be worn for various occasions, though formal kilts should be worn in Prince Charlie fashion with the tuxedo-esque jacket and cufflinks.
To further the assertion that kilts are all-around wear, I offer you a link to Kiltmen.com, who are fans of “unbifurcated garments” and take a very inclusive approach as to just what sort of man can wear a kilt.
