Costumes for the Whole Family - Part I

Since this blog’s inception, I’ve written about important costuming topics such as kilts and age appropriate costuming. These topics are of course pertinent to teenagers and adults, but what about the whole family, including kids and even grandparents?

Entire families can dress up together. Recognizing the fact that some adults are more outgoing than others as far as costumes go, here are some ideas!

Pirates! Most kids love dressing up as pirates. Girls get fun dresses, and the boys seem to love the appeal of an eye patch and a (stuffed animal) monkey companion! Due to the popularity of pirates, pirate costumes are relatively inexpensive. Pirate costumes can be reused during several times of the year for different occasions, as well—they look great at renaissance faires, Halloween, or even for themed birthday parties!

Pirate costumes are particularly diverse and forgiving for ladies. Because of the variety available, a woman can choose to dress in a revealing bodice, men’s pirate attire, or whatever feels comfortable. There are also more plus sized costume options available in the pirate category than in others if you are looking for something store-bought. To narrow down the theme, consider going as Jack Sparrow’s crew from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean!

The Wizard of Oz. Follow the yellow brick road to a successful costume idea for the whole family. Most young girls love the idea of getting to play Dorothy with her beautiful red shoes. Adult costume options include Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man. Little boys might enjoy portraying munchkins or flying monkeys!

Check back in tomorrow for Part II!
